Every year, Midpen rangers and other staff participate in an all-day training under the instruction of local fire agencies to remain certified as wildland firefighters.
As California’s drought continues, Midpen staff and the small-scale ranchers we work with as part of our Conservation Grazing Program on the San Mateo County Coast, are closely watch the changing conditions.
Much of the land protected by Midpen can be attributed to the efforts of former General Manager Craig Britton. During his time at Midpen, the District grew from just eight preserves to the 26 we now own and manage!

Former Midpen General Manager Steve Abbors is a naturalist at heart. In conversation he casually throws out facts about birds and butterflies. He logs hundreds of trail miles per month. A main driver for the work he did throughout his career was caring for the land.

Midpen is considering purchasing a 6,300-acre uplands portion of a remarkable swath of open space and agricultural land called Cloverdale Ranch, near Pescadero, from our partner Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST).
