About the Position:

Do you enjoy working outdoors? Do you have a passion for preserving outdoor recreation and open space?  Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is recruiting for an Equipment Mechanic/Operator. The Equipment Mechanic/Operator transports, operates and maintains equipment used in the construction, maintenance, restoration and repair of public trails and rural roads in the foothills and ridges of the Santa Cruz Mountains.  This position requires the use of heavy equipment such as loaders, excavators, dozers, ag tractors, backhoes and rollers.  Other responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of gas and electric-powered tools such as jackhammers, chainsaws, welders, and compactors.  For additional information about Equipment Mechanic/Operator duties, see the Job Description page on the District website.

Basic Requirements:

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: High school graduate (or GED certification) and specialized training in heavy equipment repair and operation. Three (3) years of experience operating and transporting heavy equipment and maintaining and repairing vehicles, tools, and power equipment.

Licenses & Certifications Required:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Class A Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements within six (6) months of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Basic First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a District approved Fire Suppression Training certification.

Working Conditions: Most work is outdoors within the District’s open space lands with exposure to inclement weather conditions. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Must wear prescribed District uniform, and adhere to strict safety procedures and work habits.

Additional Information: This position requires passing a pre-employment physical exam including a Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, and is subject to ongoing random drug and alcohol testing as required by the DOT and the District’s Substance Abuse Policy.
