Ferns & Other Ancient Plants

10:00 am - 1:30 pm
Monte Bello Preserve
Approximate Total Miles
3.5

Walking down into Stevens Creek Canyon, Docent Naturalists Debbie Mytels, Paul Billig, and Ping Li will help you identify various ferns and other plants that evolved before flowers graced the Earth. You'll hear stories about how ferns were a part of other cultures for many generations and how some fern parts have been an edible delicacy. You may also look for newts along the creek. On the return via the Canyon Trail, you'll stop for a snack at a sag pond and find yet another type of ancient plant before concluding the hike.

Where to Meet

Meet at the Monte Bello Parking Area on Page Mill Road (across from Los Trancos Preserve), 7 miles west of I-280 or 1.5 miles east of Skyline Boulevard. Those traveling from I-280 on Page Mill Rd. should allow approximately 35 minutes travel time.
