Hikers can now reserve a free day-use permit for additional access to hike 7 miles of trail from one of five available parking spots at the Event Center area in La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve.
Event Center parking was previously only open for equestrian parking. This new access was a suggestion from the La Honda Creek Preserve Public Access Working Group made up of La Honda-area residents, Midpen board members and constituents from throughout Midpen’s service area. The diverse group spent the last year identifying sustainable solutions for improving public access to this vast, 6,100-acre preserve, located off of Highway 84. Their work included learning about open space planning, field scouting trips, meetings, creativity, compromise and commitment to seeking solutions that met Midpen’s project goals.
Not only has Midpen won a public outreach award for this effort, the resulting suite of recommendations is helping Midpen staff make strides toward new, community-supported access to this preserve, starting with expanding permit parking at the event center.
