About the Position:
The Resource Planner I position performs basic professional level duties in support of the District’s mission, “To acquire and preserve a regional greenbelt of open space land in perpetuity; protect and restore the natural environment; and provide opportunities for ecologically sensitive public enjoyment and education.” The focus of the position is on the management, enhancement and protection of the District’s natural resources. This position will conduct field observations and studies to analyze and assess the status of natural and cultural resources; conduct literature searches and write detailed technical summaries and reports for District staff and the public; perform GPS mapping of natural features in the field; provide assistance with regulatory agency permitting and coordination; perform California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) review of projects; prepare grant applications; and assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of resource management plans. This position functions within a team environment of the Planning Department and Operations staff, and receives direction from a higher level Resource Planner.

Basic Requirements:
Knowledge of basic principles and practices of ecology, wildlife and vegetation management; knowledge of surveying and mapping techniques using GPS/GIS technology; understanding of California flora and fauna, geology, hydrology, and natural history; and basic methods and techniques of research, analysis and report writing. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required, as well as a commitment to the principles of diversity and multiculturalism. Occasional evening work is required.

Education and Experience Equivalent to a Bachelor degree in ecology, biology, earth sciences or other related sciences; and one year of experience in evaluating, surveying or monitoring natural resource systems.

Working Conditions:
Primarily office environment with regular work in an open space preserve field environment that includes travel from site to site and field data collection. Routinely sits for prolonged periods of time; extensive use of computer; when conducting field assignments, may traverse rough difficult terrain in inclement weather with exposure to poison oak.
