From Canyon to Summit

Monte Bello Preserve
Approximate Total Miles
7

Escape the valley heat and learn about geology and plants with Docent Naturalists Martin Manley and David Kocsis. On this moderately-paced hike along the Stevens Creek Nature, Canyon, Bella Vista, and Old Ranch trails you’ll experience a great view of the San Andreas Fault and discuss its effects on the landscape. You’ll descend a shaded canyon next to Stevens Creek—the real creek, not the car dealership district—to see the wildflowers, check out the California newt in its local habitat, and climb the summit of Black Mountain for a view and a lunch break at the top.

Where to Meet

Meet at the Monte Bello Parking Area on Page Mill Road (across from Los Trancos Preserve), 7 miles west of I-280 or 1.5 miles east of Skyline Boulevard. Those traveling from I-280 on Page Mill Rd. should allow approximately 35 minutes travel time.
