Explorer Hike: Lichen Eyes

Wednesday, March 4, 2026
10:30 am - 2:30 pm
El Corte de Madera Creek Preserve
Approximate Total Miles
4.5

Open your "lichen eyes" and be amazed by all these small, special species you see hiding in plain sight. Join Docent Naturalists Kate Bauer, Mary Brunkhorst, and Nick Yatsko on this moderately-paced hike to observe a variety of lichens as you hike down the El Corte de Madera Creek Trail, then up the Tafoni and Fir trails. In addition to learning to identify some of the most common local lichens, you'll discover some intriguing ways they interact with and enhance their environment. Bring a snack for a break.

Where to Meet

Meet at the Caltrans Skeggs Point Parking Area on the east side of Skyline Boulevard, about 4 miles north of La Honda Road (Highway 84) and 1.5 miles south of Kings Mountain Road.  Please note that Caltrans prohibits a left turn into the parking lot when approaching from the north along Skyline Blvd.
