Explorer Hike: Sky Island Tour

Wednesday, September 16, 2026
10:30 am - 2:30 pm
Sierra Azul Preserve
Approximate Total Miles

Take a sky island tour along the Mount Umunhum Trail with Docent Naturalists Kate Bauer, Nick Yatsko, and Annie Guo. Learn how Mount Umunhum acts as a “sky island” for plants and animals. You’ll discover how both elevation and location influence what can live on this beautiful mountain peak. You’ll start this moderately-paced hike by exploring the summit before heading down the Mt Umunhum Trail to enjoy a lunch break on a bridge near the remnants of a historic cabin. Then burn off some lunch calories as you hike back to the starting point to finish the outing with an approximately 700-foot elevation gain.

Where to Meet

Meet at the Mt. Umunhum Summit Parking Area at the top of Mt. Umunhum Road. Exit Highway 85 at Camden Avenue. (From Southbound Hwy. 85 turn left on Camden Ave. From northbound Hwy. 85 turn left on Branham Avenue, then left on Camden Ave.) Travel on Camden Ave. about 1.6 miles. Turn right on Hicks Road and travel for about 6.3 miles. Turn right on Mt. Umunhum Road and travel for 5.3 miles to the preserve parking lot on the left.
