Fungal Fun

January 8, 2023
9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve
Approximate Total Miles
5

Join the fun, finding and focusing on fungi with Docent Naturalists Chris MacIntosh, Marie Faust Evitt, and Nancy Weintraub. See a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes grow underfoot (and sometimes overhead) on this non-technical fungus appreciation hike. Hiking the trails in different habitats at stop-and-go speed, you'll train your eyes to notice the sometimes camouflaged but always fascinating fungi that flourish in winter. The rain will determine what fungi can be found. Bring stamina and your curiosity. Despite frequent stops, there are some very steep sections on the North Ridge trail; hiking poles are recommended for the hills. Due to current rainy conditions, the trail may be muddy and wet; please wear layers and sturdy shoes.

Where to Meet

Meet at the North Ridge Parking Area on Skyline Boulevard.  This entrance is next to the now closed Kings Mountain Country Store.  The parking lot is 4.5 miles south of Highway 92, and 8.1 miles north of Highway 84.
