"The Hills are Alive” Afternoon Loop

Saturday, October 17, 2026
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Long Ridge Preserve
Approximate Total Miles
4.5

Early rains may have lichen, ferns, and fungi popping up, robins may be feasting on berries, and fall colors may brighten the woods. Come see with Docent Naturalists Susan Bernhard, Ann Reisenauer, and Noa Doitel on a loop exploring the Peters Creek and Long Ridge trails. If skies are clear, you’ll enjoy a view over the Santa Cruz Mountains and towards the ocean. You’ll stop at the Wallace Stegner bench for a snack break and readings about nature. This is a moderately-paced hike with a few steeper sections and frequent stops. It is appropriate for capable children who enjoy hiking and are curious about nature.

Where to Meet

Meet at Peters Creek Roadside Parking, on the west side of Skyline Boulevard, 3.6 miles north of Highway 9 or 3.3 miles south of Page Mill Road.  If you are coming from the north on Skyline Blvd., the pullout is just past Portola Heights Road on the right.  From the south, the pullout is near the Palo Alto city limits sign on the right. There is additional parking across Skyline Blvd. at the Grizzly Flat trailhead (Santa Clara County Park).
