Morning Meander: Newts to Nutmegs

Picchetti Ranch Preserve
Approximate Total Miles

Looking for a shorter, mid-morning spring wildflower hike through gentle terrain? Join Docent Naturalists Laura Levin, Emma Finter, and Marie-Anne Neimat for a leisurely-paced exploration of the Zinfandel Trail. You’ll stop frequently to discuss the preserve’s agricultural history, geology, flora and fauna. If the seasonal pond is full, you may find an abundance of newts engaging in an aquatic mating frenzy. At the hike’s conclusion, you’ll have the option of relaxing in the shaded picnic area or exploring the historic winery grounds.

Where to Meet

Meet at the preserve parking lot on Montebello Road. From the intersection of I-280 and Foothill Expressway, go 3.5 miles southwest (toward the mountains) on Foothill Boulevard/Stevens Canyon Road.  Turn right on Montebello Rd.  The preserve is 0.5 miles up Montebello Rd. on the left.
