Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve
Please note: This was formerly the popular "Fungal Fun" hike. However, the docents leading the activity hiked the route earlier this week and did not find very many fungi since the weather has been so warm and dry over the past few weeks, conditions that do not encourage fungal flourishing. But! Of course, the docents found many other beautiful and intriguing natural phenomena, such as ferns, early-season wildflowers, birds, lichen, and chaparral plants, among others. Additionally, you will learn about the rich logging history of the region and come away from the day with an understanding of some important ecological relationships at play in this preserve.
So join Docent Naturalists Chris MacIntosh, Lyle Rice, Catherine Xun, and Mari Aldridge for a natural history appreciation day! What will you find? On this leisurely- to moderately-paced hike on the strenuous North Ridge and Whittemore Gulch trails, you'll learn about the species and their interactions that enliven the winter in different habitats. Bring your lunch, your stamina, and sense of curiosity. Despite frequent stops, there are some very steep sections of trail. Reservations are no longer required.
