Celebrate Indigenous People’s Day by exploring how native peoples who have lived in this area for thousands of years took care of the land before the arrival of Europeans. Join Docent Naturalists Marie Faust Evitt, Bobbie Riedel, and Megan Elmore for a moderately-paced hike along the beautiful Ipiwa, Alpine Loop, and Sunny Jim trails. You’ll discover how native peoples use strategies such as controlled burns and regular pruning to nurture plants and ensure abundant food and materials for homes, baskets, and medicine. Bring a snack or lunch for a picnic at Alpine Pond.

Where to Meet

Meet at the Skyline Ridge Circle Parking Area on Skyline Boulevard located one mile south of the Skyline Blvd. (Highway 35) and Page Mill/Alpine Road intersection. After entering the preserve, turn right and go to the farthest parking area. Those traveling from I-280 on Page Mill Rd. should allow approximately 45 minutes travel time.
