The office of Director of Ward 3 on the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District became vacant on October 15, 2026. See Notice of Vacancy.
The remaining members of Midpen's Board of Directors intend to appoint a successor who will serve the current, unexpired term of Director of Ward 3, which ends on January 1, 2029.
Applications are due by 5 p.m. on November 6, 2026. Public interviews will take place November through December, and the appointment will be made on December 9, at a meeting to be held at 5050 El Camino Real, Los Altos, California, 94022 at 7:00 p.m. The person appointed will hold office until January 1, 2029 when this board seat will be up for public election again.
Application Requirements
- 18 years or older
- Registered voter residing in the boundaries of District Ward 3, which includes Sunnyvale and parts of Cupertino. Those interested can determine if they are registered in Ward 3 using this interactive map.

- Dedicated to the preservation of open space
- Involvement in, or awareness of, local government functions and operations
- Knowledge or awareness of finance and budgeting
- Involvement in community service
- Interest, time and energy to give to the job
- Sense of humor
- Flexible schedule
- Sensitivity to the community
- Ability to work in a team setting
- Knowledge of or awareness of District activities
- Not single-issue oriented
- Breadth of awareness of, and outlook on, kinds of issues District faces
- Knowledge of how District fits into the greater region
- Ability to bring strength to and complement current Board
- Comfortable with public speaking and working with groups
- Ability to make decisions for the good of the District in the face of political and public pressure
- Treat colleagues and staff professionally and respectfully
- Facility with electronic communication tools
