The District is divided into seven geographic wards, each represented by an elected official for a four-year term. The next election will be held on November 6, 2018 for Ward 1, 2, 5, and 6 Directors.
Anyone who is 18 years of age and who is a resident and registered voter in the ward from which they are nominated may run for a seat on the Board of Directors.
Potential candidates are required to gather fifty (50) valid signatures of registered voters from their Ward on a required nomination form furnished only by the District Clerk.
Prior to soliciting or receiving campaign contributions, a candidate must file Form 501, Candidate Intention Statement, with the District Clerk. The form is available from the district clerk or can be downloaded from the Fair Political Practices website.

Notice of Election
Notice is hereby given, pursuant to the provisions of Section 5529 of the California Public Resources Code and Section 12112 of the California Elections Code, that a general District election to be consolidated with the General Election will be held in the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, to choose a successor for four (4) offices of the Board of Directors to be elected in Wards 1, 2, 5, and 6 of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District each for a full term of four years.
Generally, the wards include the following areas:
- 1 - Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga
- 2 - Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Palo Alto, Stanford, Sunnyvale
- 5 - East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Stanford
- 6 - Atherton, La Honda, Loma Mar, Menlo Park, Pescadero, Portola Valley, Redwood City, San Gregorio, Woodside
The qualifications required by the principal act for each office for which candidates are nominated are:
Each Director shall be a resident and a registered voter in the ward from which he or she is nominated.
Official nominating petitions for eligible candidates desiring to file for any of the elective offices shall be obtained from the Office of the District Clerk, Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, 330 Distel Circle, Los Altos, California, 94022, telephone number (650) 691-1200 on or after July 16, 2018, and must be filed with the District Clerk not later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday August 10, 2018.
If nomination papers for an incumbent are not filed by August 10, 2018 (the 88th day before the election), the voters shall have until 5:00 p.m. on August 15, 2018 (the 83rd day before the election), to nominate candidates other than the incumbent for such office. This extension is not applicable where there is no incumbent eligible to be elected.
If no one or only one person is nominated for an elective office, appointment to the elective office may be made as prescribed by California Public Resources Code Section 5532(e).
The polls will be open between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
The Board of Supervisors of the respective counties is authorized to canvass the returns of this District election and certify the results to the District.
