Hikers on the Whittemore Trail in Purisima Creek Redwoods

All Trails in Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve Open

Whittemore Gulch Trail in Purisima Creek Redwoods (Karl Gohl)

Purisima Creek Redwoods was one of Midpen’s most hard-hit preserves during last winter’s unprecedented storms due in part to its steep topography and abundant water. All 23 miles of trail in the preserve are now open, with the reopening of the popular Whittemore Gulch Trail on September 22 after a 6-month closure due to storm damage. The reopened Whittemore Gulch Trail is temporarily only open to hikers, and all of Purisima Creek Redwood’s trails are temporarily closed to horses until after this coming winter’s rainy season to allow the new repairs to settle.

Midpen’s expert trail-building and maintenance staff removed downed trees, repaired landslides and made other repairs to make the Whittemore Gulch Trail safe and usable again.

The lower preserve parking area and access on Purisima Creek Road near Half Moon Bay remains temporarily closed until the County of San Mateo completes storm-damage repairs to the county roadway, which are currently in progress. We appreciate your patience as we work to bring this beloved preserve fully back online for public enjoyment.
