For over 50 years, the Midpen has been dedicated to protecting and preserving more than 70,000 acres of diverse open space across San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties. From the wetlands along the San Francisco Bay to the majestic redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the District’s preserves offer a sanctuary for nature and the community alike. Midpen is now inviting passionate individuals to become part of this vital mission as District Rangers.

District Rangers serve in a dynamic and rewarding role that combines public safety, natural resource protection and community engagement. As sworn peace officers, Rangers patrol the preserves by foot, bike, ATV, truck or electric motorcycle, enforcing regulations and local, State and Federal laws. Day-to-day responsibilities include responding to medical emergencies, wildland fires and search and rescue missions, as well as performing light maintenance and resource management tasks.

“I decided to become a Ranger with the District to help people enjoy the same preserves that I grew up hiking and running in,” says Lead Ranger Andrew Verbrugge. “Now that I am a ranger with the District, I gain the most satisfaction by helping to facilitate positive impacts on people’s recreational experiences. Hearing from visitors how much they enjoyed our preserves makes being a Ranger the most rewarding career I’ve ever done.”

Beyond enforcement, Rangers engage visitors through educational programs and outreach, fostering appreciation and respect for these treasured lands. Rangers work independently and collaborate with local law enforcement and fire agencies, with work schedules that include weekends, nights and holidays in all weather conditions.

Applicants should have a combination of education and experience—typically an Associate’s degree and one year in visitor services or a related field. Backgrounds in law enforcement, natural sciences, resource management or wildland firefighting are highly desirable.

The hiring process includes application review, interviews, skills assessments, fitness testing, and background checks. Successful candidates complete a District-approved academy and a 12-week field training program, with all training, uniforms and equipment provided.

"One of my favorite parts about my job is that every day is different," says Ranger Robin Reiterman Curtis. "I can go on a solo hike in the backcountry, work as a team with other rangers when responding to an emergency call, talk with a school group visiting the preserve, or work on a maintenance project. But no matter what happens, I get to spend my day outdoors and for me, there's nothing better than that."

Recruitment for District Rangers is open now and will close on April 5th. The District offers competitive salary and benefits packages. Interested parties are encouraged to visit openspace.org/jobs for more information.
