CAL FIRE’s vision of a strategic 19-mile fuel break around the Town of La Honda is becoming a reality. Fuel breaks provide safe access for fire engines and firefighting personnel, support the creation of fire lines and help slow and reduce the intensity of potential fires.
This project is being led and managed by the San Mateo Resource Conservation District, and requires partnering with 21 private and public landowners, including Midpen.

Work began in September on expanding a section of the fuel break through Midpen’s La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve. Contractors are removing low limbs and dead, downed or diseased trees; and chipping and spreading materials on-site in accordance with Midpen's ecologically sensitive vegetation management practices.
Funding is provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire Prevention Program. The full project is expected to be completed this year, resulting in approximately 250 acres treated in total.
